For young people, learning to live in the community is one of the most important areas of their future lives. Most of us have lived with flatmates or been in lodgings of some sort during transitional times of our lives and have benefited from learning new skills, like how to travel to work, cooking own meals, coping with our own washing and money management.
In supported housing people have the added advantage of having a responsible person on hand to support where necessary, ensure their safety and provide good utilisation of their increasing skills. Many young people with mild or moderate disabilities find this is crucial to their progress and is the ‘next step’ after school or college on their path to independence. Difficulties such as communication problems, literacy or numeracy and interacting with others socially means they are able to have one to one support when support is needed in order to further enhance their skills. In supported housing placements the clients are encouraged to look after themselves as much as possible.
We recognise that every one of our residents has different needs which is why we create an Individual Support Plan to ensure those needs are met.
Staff are mostly qualified to a minimum of NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care and are DBS checked. They are familiar with all policies and procedures set by the Care Quality Commission for Shared Lives and Supported Housing.
